Proportioning Valve The proportioning valve is normally located in the vicinity of the master cylinder, and divides the brake fluid pressure between the front and rear brakes to prevent rear wheel skid. Front brakes always need more pressure than the rear brakes due to the fact that the vehicle will "lean" forward under braking conditions, which applies more weight to the front end and less to the rear.
