Seat (3rd Row or Bed, Wagon/Van/SUV)  Folding seats in the back of a station wagon, Van or SUV.

Seat (Front)  The vehicle's front seat. May be upholstered in cloth, vinyl, leather or any combination of coverings. May be a single seat on each side, as in "bucket" seats, or a bench seat that runs completely across the vehicle. Quite often enhancements are added in the form of seat heaters, adjustment memories, electrical adjustments, lumbar supports and so forth.

Seat (Rear or 2nd Row)  Rear seats in the passenger compartment. The second row seats are normally permanently mounted, though in many cases they are hinged to fold into the floor, or to fold upward or rearward to provide access to the trunk area or provide additional storage.

Seat Belt  Passenger restraint device normally consisting of a series of two cloth straps, one that goes across the passenger's lap, and one that goes across the shoulders. They are designed to prevent ejection from the vehicle in case of an accident. Automatic seatbelts literally "buckle you up" as soon as the doors are closed, on some vehicles.

Seat Belt Motor  Used with automatically engaging seat belts, the seat belt motor is normally mounted in the door, and moves the upper seat belt into position to protect the passenger and driver from harm automatically, either when the door is closed or when the vehicle is switched on.

Seat Belt Track  The "track" in upper part of the door or along the lower edge of the roof that provides a guide for the shoulder belt in an automatic seat belt system.

Seat Control Module  The controlling computer for electrically operated seats. Most often found underneath the dash.

Seat Track (Front)  The "rails" on which the front seats slide so that they may be adjusted for taller or shorter drivers.

Security System Control Module  The main computer for the vehicle security system, it controls the alarm operation and quite often the door lock/unlock function. In many vehicles the security system control module disables the ignition system.

Shifter Assembly (Floor)  The transmission shifter lever, mounted in the floor for either a manual or automatic transmission. A secondary floor shifter is also often incorporated into four-wheel drive designs. In this case the secondary shifter engages and disengages the four-wheel drive unit, or transfer case.

Shock Absorber  Mounted between both the front and rear axles and the frame, the shock absorbers are cylinders that keep the vehicle from continually bouncing after it hits a bump. There are normally two shock absorbers per axle.

Slave Cylinder (Clutch)  A hydraulic cylinder mounted on a manual transmission that actuates the clutch when the clutch pedal is depressed.

Soft Top  The soft fabric top of a "convertible", which is a vehicle with a roof that folds out of the way enabling the driver and passengers to enjoy nice weather without being enclosed in the vehicle.

Spare Tire (with Rim)  The spare tire, normally can be found in the trunk, or underneath the vehicle, in the rear.

Spare Tire Carrier  The spare tire mount bracket. It's normally mounted either underneath the car or in the trunk area, out of sight. In hatchbacks and other vehicles with tailgates they're often found in the rear part of the cargo area or passenger area.

Spare Tire Cover  The decorative cover over your spare tire. The spare tire cover may be as simple as a vinyl cover over the tire or be as complex as an entire hidden compartment, complete with jack and tools.

Speaker  The radio audio speakers. They're most normally in the dash and doors, but can be located anywhere in a vehicle that provides for good sound reproduction quality. A quality set of speakers is probably one of the better upgrades to enhance the sound of your entertainment system.

Speedometer Cluster  The driver's information display, or instrument cluster, mounted directly in front of the driver on the dash, it conveys most necessary information for vehicle condition and speed to the driver.

Spindle (Front)  The part, mounted on the front axle, to which the hub is affixed and rotates on. Basically, the center point or "axis" of the front wheel.

Spoiler (Front)  The plastic or fiberglass airflow device on the vehicle's front end, it's normally part of the front bumper cover, and smoothes the airflow over the front of the vehicle.

Spoiler (Rear)  Mostly decorative on production cars, the rear spoiler is a "wing", mounted upside down on the trunk lid, and is used to provide a down force when the vehicle is at speed to improve handling.

Starter  The electrical motor used to give the engine its initial spin. It's located in most cases at the rear, right corner of the engine, where the engine and transmission are connected.

Steering Box  The steering gear box, it's most often found on the driver's side, under the hood, at the end of the steering shaft. The steering box is responsible for changing the radial motion of the steering wheel inputs into a lateral motion that can be used for the car to change direction.

Steering Column  The part of the steering shaft that protrudes into the passenger compartment, and serves as the mounting point for the steering wheel, turn signals, and other controls.

Steering Rack  The assembly of levers at the end of the steering shaft that transmits steering wheel motion to the front wheels.

Steering Wheel  The steering wheel. The steering wheel is basically used to change the car's direction, but is in fact becoming an integrated control center for many other functions. The horn, sound controls, and even climate controls, are finding their way onto the steering wheel as ways are found to increase the driver's comfort and focus on the highway.

Strut Assembly (Front)  Front struts are like shock absorbers in that they absorb and slow down the bounces from bumps, but they also pivot and are part of the steering assembly. They're mounted in the vicinity of the front wheels and are connected to the frame and the axles, and their tops protrude into the engine compartment.

Strut Assembly (Rear)  Rear struts are like shock absorbers in that they absorb and slow down the bounces from bumps, but they are much longer. They are connected to the rear axle and extend up into the body of the vehicle, unlike shocks, which only extend between the axle and frame.

Stub Axle (Rear)  A short, tapered, steel shaft, similar in shape and function to a "spindle" that the hub and wheel assembly rotate on. The stub axle will be connected to the suspension component that is attached to the frame, and the hub (with bearings) will mount directly onto the stub axle. The stub axle is normally a component in vehicles with independent rear suspension, that is, suspensions that allow each wheel to move independently of the other, without a continuous axle shaft between them.

Sun Visor  Pivoting glare shield in the passenger compartment. Normally hangs from the roof just in front of the driver and passenger. The sun visor may incorporate a vanity mirror and light for the passenger's and driver's convenience.

Sunroof Assembly  A "window" in the roof of the vehicle. A sunroof will consist of the sunroof itself, a motor or crank to open the sunroof, and all associated seals and hardware needed to make it function.

Sunroof Glass  The glass in a sunroof. The sunroof glass may be tinted or mirrored, and provides protection from the elements while the sunroof is closed.

Sunroof Motor  The motor that opens and closes a sunroof. The system may be a simple as a switch located in close proximity to the sunroof, or may be controlled from the dash via a sunroof controller.

Supercharger  Basically a belt driven compressor, a supercharger is mounted on top of a few high performance engines, and is used to pump more air into the engine for increased horsepower.

Suspension Assembly (Rear, Independent)  The entire rear axle, shock absorbers and spring assembly for a vehicle with an independent rear end. Independent, in this case, means that each wheel is articulated and can move up or down, independent of the axle and the wheel on the other side.

Suspension Control Module  The electrical control unit for active suspension systems, normally located underneath the dash or on the firewall.

Suspension Cross member (K-Frame)  On a vehicle equipped with a K-Frame suspension system, the cross member is the main support that runs from side-to-side underneath the car's front end. The entire K-Frame assembly, if removed from the vehicle, would appear to be in the shape of a "K", hence the name.
