Stub Axle A short, tapered, steel shaft, similar in shape and function to a "spindle" that the hub and wheel assembly rotate on. The stub axle will be connected to the suspension component that is attached to the frame, and the hub (with bearings) will mount directly onto the stub axle. The stub axle is normally a component in vehicles with independent rear suspension, that is, suspensions that allow each wheel to move independently of the other, without a continuous axle shaft between them.
